I bought a Microsoft Surface Book 1st gen back in 2016 for around 2,700 Euro, which was pretty good equipped with a Core-i7-processor, 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB SSD. I sold it and I felt like missing out on something.
I bought a Microsoft Surface Book 1st gen back in 2016 for around 2,700 Euro, which was pretty good equipped with a Core-i7-processor, 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB SSD. I gave it to one of our brightest minds once he joined the company back this year – ultimately feeling like I miss something.
For whatever reason, I surfed on eBay the other day.
I stumbled upon some Surface Books 1st gen, equipped with the smaller Core-i5-processor, smaller SSDs and less RAM.
It felt like „For writing stuff and surfing around, it would be ok“, so I looked a little deeper into the offerings and found a Surface Book with Performance Base, equipped with 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD and the faster GTX 965m graphics. For not even half of the price a current gen model costs. And also cheaper than other Surface Books with PB or at least discrete graphics. Offered by a solid dealer, including an invoice.
What shall I say?
It will be delivered on Friday.
And I don’t want to discuss my shopping behaviors.
I don’t see why I should spend thousands of Euros for a new computer, when a used one would do almost the same job for a fraction of the price.
Well, ok, there are some moments where I decide differently, for example at the end of last year when I ordered a brand new MacBook Pro 15.4 inch. But this again has proven my opinion about new hardware usually not being worth the money you spend for it – I am actually quite unhappy with this device, as battery life is very subpar (around 4hrs, regardless of the work I throw on it) and the keyboard is so loud to touch upon. Not to speak of the adapter hell, since literally no accessory fits on the MacBook.
So, I decided, I needed something more long-lasting in regards to battery life. Something, making typing a pleasure again. And something smaller, since 15.4 inch are not really portable. And, finally, something cheaper – not only when buying it, but also while owning it. Something, where a power adapter and a cable won’t cost more than 100,– EUR. Something, where I could swap the internal SSD and upgrade the memory, if needed. Something, where perhaps LTE would be integrated.
Impossible? No way!
I looked at eBay and Amazon and checked some dozens of dealer-websites for offers, until I found it: A used Lenovo Thinkpad X260 in good condition, having a LTE-card, being equipped properly with a 256GB SSD and 16GB RAM, displaying the content in Full-HD and allowing to change the battery.
Small, portable. Perfect for working in the customer’s office or while sitting in the train. Nice companion to my iPad Pro 10.5 inch, way more versatile but not so light and easy to carry around.
I got it for only 650,– EUR including two batteries.
Looking forward to using this one with Ubuntu, BTW.
Many, if not the most, mobile devices do not provide wireless charging capabilities. This is annoying, since it is so convenient to charge without plugging in any cable.
The solution is very simple: Just plug in a wireless charging receiver into the charging port of your device. Yes, it looks a little odd and you’ll need a case to properly ensure the receiver’s position, but you’ll have the comfort of wireless charging immediately and without extensive cost, since receivers start at around 10,– Euro.
You can find the receiver here: Amazon (Affiliate Link)
